The Meaning Behind Nocturne op.9 No.2

I've been intensely listening to classical music this past couple of weeks and selecting the one I will audition with for the concerto competition. As I was scrolling through YouTube I came across Chopin-Nocturne op.9 No.2. The piece is so sentimental that it made me cry. Trust me, I never cry, however, this time it was how the song was touching yet soothing.

The piece begins with a gentle, slow, and high-pitched melody that made me remember all of my happy memories from when I was young. However, as the piece proceeds it gets slower creating a sense of missing how easy and drama-less the past used to be. No college apps, no APs, just recesses and my friends. The change in the key signature changed the mood to a more expressive contrast, showcasing the depth and dramatic variation that makes you want to continue listening while thinking of the past. As I heard the different dynamics as well as trills and grace notes it made me wonder about the "What if?" in different events of my past life. What if Covid had never happened? Would I still be the same person I am today?  This creates a romantic yet calm mood that made me think of when Romeo killed himself just to die along with Juliet. It is the type of music that creates a sad ending with a dramatic plot to it. In addition, I know that this piece is famous for being in movies about war where a person usually dies. Yes, sad however it's the heroism and patriotism to die for the people you love that's expressed in the piece by its contrasting melody with its variety of phrasing movements.

When I heard this piece it made me feel nostalgic and I felt that my heart was crying yet it's this music that healed this pain. When hearing this world you enter into a world where time doesn't pass making you feel the sadness inside of you. The rhythm changes are what comfort our soul and create calmness and tranquility, it is like the medicine for nostalgia. It's screaming without any sound coming out. Through the chord changing I can hear the sobs and grief the musician is going through, yet it is its rests and pauses that give hope into the future that our hearts will be healed from whatever suffering we are going through. It gives the message to have hope in aiming for a happy life. Our nostalgia is not forever, we must let go of our sorrows and keep moving. The high notes in the song tell us to wake up from our nostalgia because we have a whole world waiting for us. You only have one task and that is to make everything we can from our present.
